Rocket Engine Fluid Dynamics, Engineering and Analysis.

Analysis and modelling of rocket engine dynamic and transient processes performed by Astrium's fluid dynamics team at Ottobrunn, Germany.

 

Main Activities
The main activities of the fluid dynamics team are the analysis and modelling of dynamic and transient fluid processes associated with liquid propellant rocket engines. This experience has been used to support the design of the:

  • Thrust chamber of the Aestus upper stage engine for Ariane 5.
  • Thrust chamber of the Vulcain main engine for the core stage of Ariane 5.
  • Propulsion system of the upper stage of Ariane 5.
  • Thrust chamber of the Vinci upper stage engine of Ariane 5.

Dynamic Processes

  • Evaluation and modelling of high frequency rocket combustion oscillations.
  • Evaluation and modelling of low frequency system oscillations.
  • Stability analysis.
  • Definition of concept and design criteria for the avoidance of instability.
  • Design of accumulators and acoustic resonators to support combustion stability.

Transient Processes

  • Evaluation and modelling of transient behaviour in rocket engine systems and components.
  • Parametric analysis to support concept definition and design criteria to enable the required transient behaviour.
  • Predictions for component and system level tests.
  • Detailed modelling of transient thermal events in rocket engine thrust chambers.

  • MATLAB / SIMULINK.
  • ATHLET / THESEUS.

  • Development and use of scaled databases for dynamic and transient processes.
  • Development and use of empirical and semi-empirical correlations for the definition of dynamic and transient processes.
